The Last of Its Kind

Playboy’s First Annual Humour Competition, that is. This never really became a tradition since there was already a column called Playboy’s Party Jokes. The cover and below pages are from the August 1978 issue. Among thousands of competitors, future legend Dennis Miller came second place and won $500 for a joke that finally saw the light of day in the June 1979 issue: “The only difference between group sex and group therapy is that in group therapy you hear about everyone’s problems, and in group sex you see them.”

Very rarely do people fill in competitions for the whole world to see, especially if they don’t want to get ripped off. I could have printed off each page, written on them and scanned them, but I chose to simply type on them using Microsoft Paint.

To quote Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront (1954): “I could have been a contender.”
